Al mijmerend terugdenken aan de goede oude tijd tijdens WWII en dit allemaal al parkerend in achteruit met een jeep…het doet wat met een mens.

Een ttv-foto die ik onlangs heb genomen met mijn 6×6 Yashica in de tuin.

Naaktfotografie is toch altijd iets riskant.

Voornamelijk dan de kwestie om hier toch “gracieus” mee om te gaan.

De lijn kan hierbij heel dun zijn, een fotograaf balanceert al vlug naar ofwel een tactvolle foto of een foto voor een gewoon “ordinair” boekje.

Ik hoop dat ik er tactvol mee ben omgegaan…

GAME THEORY by Sean Perry

Game theory is a mathematical construct that determines an optimal course of action based on the logical choice being selected from available options. It is a buzz word in many circles these days, being applied to everything from economics to evolutionary biology. A simple truth of this system is that the fewer options available, the higher the probability that success will be achieved.

The fundamentals class illustrates this concept perfectly. They have one camera, one lens and a single type of b&w film. There are no flash units or tripods. Within these limitations a beautiful phenomenon occurs in which the distance between emotion and final image is reduced. Free from the fog of unnecessary choices, these students enjoy a more intimate relationship with their subject.

A limited choice of tools increases the probability of making a successful image. They have given themselves a better chance to be lucky, to be in the moment.

Complex concepts can be stated in simple equations and metaphors. The medium by it’s very nature is a simplification. Placing a frame around a scene, focusin on a particular point, exaggerating contrast and tonality. These are all tools to plae heightened interest around a subject and reduce the peripheral.

In one still frame, the power of life force and expanse of the human condition can be simplified and communicated across class, culture and time. The making of this magic is frequently lost when the method or equipment clutters the attention of the moment.

I have observed artisans who act with a determined will to master their toolbox in order to magnify expressive intent. I strive to instill a desire in my students to earn their tools, to grasp what will make plain the story of an image, not convolute it, to resist being seduced by the latest, greatest shiniest widget.

Elite athletes will often say “I give myself the best chance to win” They focus on what the moment requires and edit out the superfluous. It’s a fundamental element of how to elevate and respond.

Photography is about gettin to the heart of an image – which is greater than it’s subject. Strong teachers transcend material, identify a path of focused attention and illuminate a destination of expressive imagery.

It is the difference between teaching and inspiring…

Gisterenavond foto’s gaan nemen van het Fair trade festival ‘The Night You Change’ in het Depot in Leuven.

Het muzikaal optreden begon met de Leuvense band Los Callejeros.

Daarna kwam Kristien Hemmerechts even langs om voor te lezen.

Afwisselend met mevrouw Hemmerechts kwam Wannes Capelle even langs voor een muzikale intermezzo in het West-Vlaams.

Iets later ging het opnieuw verder in het West-Vlaams maar deze keer stond Flip Kowlier aan het roer..

Een portret in de studio zonder enige assistentie, het is niet makkelijk. Lichtopstelling, licht meten, kadrage maken, model in de juiste richting laten kijken, nog eens een aanpassing aan het licht, terug licht meten, kadrage nakijken en dan uiteindelijk het knopje indrukken.

Soms zie je zo eens een studioshoot met een bekende fotograaf, waarbij alles al mooi is opgesteld, 37 assistentes aanwezig zijn, alles perfect is nagekeken en waarbij de fotograaf in kwestie gewoon binnekomt, de camera vastneemt en 131 foto’s neemt, achteraf de camera terug geeft aan de assistente en gewoon de kamer verlaat.

Ik denk dat ik dan toch nog steeds voor de manier waarop ik het nu moet doen verkies.

Gisteren een trouwreportage gedaan in het flikken-walhalla genaamd Gent, het was echt zeer leuk om te doen, voornamelijk ook omdat het koppel vrienden zijn, wat het aan de ene kant wat “relaxter” maakt omdat je ze kent en aan de andere kant toch ook wat zenuwachtiger omdat je zeker geen fouten wilt maken omdat je ze kent.

Maar op het stadhuis na (verschrikkelijk licht) verliep alles gelukkig vlotjes.
